Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very interesting sport. It's often called human chess because you have to think so much. A lot of the research is very hard to find. You basically have to do your own research and video analysis to breakdown matches. A lot of people have actually studied competitors tendencies and have broke them down in percentages. We are focusing on the Berimbolo technique and their are a few "specialists" in this area. One of the best competitors of the Berimbolo is Rafael Mendes.
"All matches observed of Rafael Mendes used in this small sample occurred at IBJJF events, inside his weight division, and between 2012-2013. Only techniques, occurrences, and outcomes that were recorded are displayed in the data below (i.e. if no butterfly sweeps occurred, there will not be a representation of that in the sample data). Matches were selected at random based on available matches – selected using a random generator from 20 total available IBJJF matches matches between 2012-2013. This is a limited sample – but given the estimated amount of matches in this time period – it is well above the percentage necessary to create a scientifically validated trend sampling."(The Science of JIu Jitsu)
Sweeps (Type)
Ankle Pick sweep1, Tomanagi 1, Sit-up and overtake opponent 4, Berimbolo 5 Omoplata sweep 1 Total Sweeps12. Out of the 12 sweeps 5 sweeps were Berimbolo sweeps. 42% of the time he accomplished this sweep. This is his number one tendency when looking to sweep and come up on top or take the back.
