This is the first week in trying to learn how to Berimbolo. What was very difficult in learning the first part of the technique is staying on your neck and shoulders. It was very difficult at first because my legs wanted to fall down to the ground. With more practice I will become more comfortable with this situation in weeks to come. What is the Berimbolo and what is it used for? The Berimbolo is a type of spin used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. It's primary use is to take the back off the spin where you spin under the opponent to disrupt their base. Berimbolo means "scramble" portuguese. It originated from the guard called De La Riva and it's origin is from the early 2000's. Why would Berimbolo help in competition? The Berimbolo would help in competition because it will help you advance to the back or a top position. Taking the back is the number 1 way to finish an opponent and is the most high percentage finish in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you always want to disrupt your opponents base because this is how a person stands on the ground. For example, if you take one leg off of a table the table will fall over. The same principals apply to the Berimbolo and disrupting the opponents base. Here is a video of my week 1 progression for learning the Berimbolo. I hope you at home can follow these steps and you can learn with me on this journey. |
