Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
When reading about this section I realized that we don’t have a lot of learning about listening. My wife tells me constantly that I “never listen” or that “I never follow instructions.” I personally think I have a listening problem. I am very stubborn and I always think I am right. This can be a problem when you work with others because at times if I don’t agree with what they have to say I instantly shut myself off and don’t really soak in what they are trying to say. “Most people listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. You listen to yourself as you prepare in your mind what you are going to say, the questions you are going to ask, etc.” (Steven Covey, 2015) This kind of validates my poor listening qualities. I am trying to work on this flaw, but I think it’s genetic.
